February's birthstone is the amethyst, so continuing with our theme of birthstone colors this month's color is amethyst. We have our sale bin full of lovely purples. Following along with the Tiffany and Co. poem (published in 1870, author unknown) the verse for February is: The February-born shall find Sincerity and peace of mind, Freedom from passion and from care, If they an amethyst will wear. This poem seems kind of strange to me, but maybe a February person can explain it. The amethyst is a variety of quartz and must always be purple, although there are a wide range of shades of purple quartz that can be called amethyst. The crystals are long prisms with six sided pyramids on the ends. The word "amethyst" comes from Greek and means not drunken. Today the amethyst is associated with spirituality, wisdom, sobriety and security. Perhaps these four traits are clues to the meaning of the verse. There are some lovely yarns in the bin and knitting with them should bring some peace of mind! CommentsLeave a Reply | AuthorMSY&C Staff ArchivesMay 2012 ArchivesMay 2012 CategoriesAll |
